SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — Senate Majority Leader John Thune is facing mounting backlash from conservatives after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections.

In a post on X, the South Dakota Republican defended his record, pointing to tax cuts, border security, judicial confirmations and economic policies under President Donald Trump.

Thune also vowed Republicans would not stand by as Democrats attempt to undo their accomplishments.

But conservative critics are demanding accountability, particularly over Thune’s failure to advance the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.

Conservative commentator Jack Posobiec called on Thune to step down, while Federalist CEO Sean Davis demanded his resignation.

Thune has defended keeping the Senate filibuster, arguing eliminating it could help Democrats push through their agenda when they regain power.

Despite the criticism, Thune reportedly plans to seek another term as Senate Republican leader next week.
