Democrats projected to win House majority, ending GOP control

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — Democrats are projected to retake the U.S. House of Representatives, Newsmax reported Tuesday night, ending Republican control of the chamber and setting up divided government for the final two years of President Donald Trump’s term.
Democrats needed a net gain of three seats to secure the 218 seats required for a majority.
Among the key victories, Rep. Jared Moskowitz won reelection in Florida’s 25th Congressional District, defeating Republican Scott Singer. In western North Carolina, Democrat Jamie Ager flipped the Republican-held 11th Congressional District, defeating state Rep. Jennifer Balkcom and Libertarian Travis Groo.
The projected majority puts House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., in position to become speaker when the new Congress convenes in January.
Democratic control would give the party the power to set committee agendas, issue subpoenas and block Republican legislation, creating a major obstacle for Trump’s agenda during his final two years in office.
Jeffries had repeatedly predicted Democrats would reclaim the chamber, drawing comparisons to the 2018 midterms, when Democrats flipped the House during Trump’s first term.
Republicans faced political headwinds heading into Election Day, including Trump’s approval ratings, voter concerns over affordability and the war with Iran.
Control of the Senate remained undetermined at the time of the House projection, leaving the balance of power in the upper chamber unresolved.
