OR Officials Try To Keep Washington Waste From Being Transported on Oregon Roads

The U.S. Department of Energy has decided not to construct facilities at Washington’s Hanford Nuclear Site to solidify the nuclear waste there.
Maxwell Woods with the Oregon DOE says the decision now leaves the door open for liquid, radioactive waste coming to Oregon roads, while on it’s way to permanent disposal locations in Utah and Texas, which he says is unacceptable.
“One of the options would be for the liquid waste to be transported to a private company in Richland, Washington,” Woods said.
“It could then be turned into a solid block before transporting to our state,” Woods continued.
“From our perspective, that’s fine,” Woods said. “As long as the material is solid before it comes into Oregon.”
About 50 million gallons of waste are flagged to head to the disposal locations.
