“We Can All Win If We Do It Right.” Transfer QB Maalik Murphy Talks OSU Offense And Leading The Charge In Corvallis

Excitement is building this spring with Oregon State football, in large part due to the latest quarterback addition in former Texas and Duke QB Maalik Murphy via the transfer portal.
Reportedly in Corvallis with a $1.5 Million guarantee in NIL, Murphy joined John Canzano on 750 The Game to talk about his latest collegiate transfer.
“It’s been great, honestly,” Murphy said of his move across the country. “I was able to get everything settled in pretty quickly. Quicker than the last time I got up and moved. It’s been treating me well out here in Corvallis. Hanging out with the guys, getting to know everybody and get familiar with the places around me.”
Murphy is familiar with Beavers offensive coordinator Ryan Gunderson and the scheme he runs, which played a role in Murphy’s decision to come to Corvallis.
“The familiarity with him, a couple of the players that were already on the team, as well as Coach Bray, meeting him and talking to him the last time I was in the transfer portal process, that definitely played a huge role,” said Murphy.
Oregon State concludes spring practice on Saturday in front of fans at Reser Stadium in a team scrimmage, similar to what the program has done in recent seasons. But Murphy said he is aiming to keep things simple.
“Honestly, I’ll just treat it as another day to go out with the guys and get better,” he said. “It’s another practice for us, it’s just open to the public now. So I don’t want to do too much. Just make sure we’re getting some good work out of it and we’re making each other better and having fun while doing it. Hope to meet some fans, and that’s about it.”
Off a five-win season, Murphy said he’s encouraged by the growth he’s seen in the offense so far this spring.
“We’re still trying to find our identity completely,” he said. “I think we can be super well-rounded, and run the ball very well, of course with [Anthony Hankerson] back there at running back. Having a strong run game will open up the pass game and play-action pass, and all those type of things. I think we’re just trying to find a way to balance all that and put it in a way where everyone can eat.
“It’s one of those things where we can all win if we do it right. I’m super excited for the future of our offense and how we’ve been practicing so far. I think we have a very high ceiling.”
