Oregon State Drops A Tough One At San Francisco 54-52

Beavers Drop Weekend Opener
SAN FRANCISCO – Oregon State women’s basketball dropped its weekend opener 54-52 on the road at San Francisco.
Catarina Ferreira led the team with a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double. The senior also recorded three steals. AJ Marotte scored a team-high 13 points, adding four rebounds, a block and a steal.
Kennedie Shuler contributed all over the court with seven points, three assists, two steals and a block. Ally Schimel had a team-best plus-minus of +16, splashing two three-pointers for six points.
The story of the game was extra possessions. The Beavs played their typical excellent defense throughout the game, holding the Dons to 30 percent shooting from the floor while making 44 percent of their own shots. USF attempted 17 more shots, however, just enough to eke out the win.
After a tough first half, OSU cleaned up its rebounding and turnovers in the second half, allowing the Dons to take just three more shots in part because of improved rebounding, and an ability to force turnovers and steal possessions back.
Ferreira and Shuler both recorded two steals in the second half with Marotte and Schimel each grabbing one as part of a 17-0 run between the third and fourth quarters to claw back from down 12. OSU led by as much as 48-43 as part of the run.
The Dons countered with four straight points to tie the game and a three-pointer from Freja Werth with 48 seconds left proved to be the game-winner. OSU had an opportunity to tie with eight seconds remaining, but shots didn’t fall and USF escaped with the win.
Oregon State closes its WCC-opening stretch of seven road games in 10 games with Pacific on Saturday before returning home to battle Washington State on Monday.
